Primary 1 develop their vocabulary through Word Aware

Image
As part of our whole school Word Aware approach to create a language-enriched environment that promotes vocabulary development in our learners, the boys and girls of primary 1 explored the word ‘tumbling’ encountered in the story of the Stickman. The children learned the meaning of the word through a multi-sensory approach, then activated this in their play-based learning sessions. This included playing a ‘tumbling’ dice addition game, building a ‘tumbling’ tower, acting out a ‘tumbling’ role play scenario and drawing a picture of something ‘tumbling’.  The children are already excited to select their new word of the week next week!  Molly creates a colourful drawing of 'tumbling' blocks Tommy and Eva-Rose enjoy a game of Jenga and try to stop it from 'tumbling' over Oh no it tumbled over! Primary 1 go on an Autumn walk

Image
As part of our Seasons topic, the boys and girls of primary took their learning outdoors through an Autumn walk around the school grounds.  We looked for signs of Autumn, including bare trees, different coloured leaves, conkers, wildlife and fungi.  We collected leaves that we plan to use to create some Autumn art work.  We all had a lovely afternoon in the Autumn sun! We learned what makes the leaves to change colour in the Autumn season We had fun looking for signs of Autumn and ticking them off our list when we found them We found a huge bare tree Bailey found some fungi which led to a discussion about the importance of not eating these types of mushrooms! Olivia collects leaves for our Autumn art work Ava spotted some red berries but we know these are not the type of berries that are suitable for eating! We were amazed to find so many different colours of leaves and practised naming the colours in Spanish!
