Edinbarnet’s new additions!

As part of primary 1’s topic this term ‘On the Farm’ the children were delighted to receive a special delivery of 10 chick eggs from ‘Farmer Jack’.  Farmer Jack wrote to the children asking if they could help to look after the eggs until they hatched as the mother hen had laid so many she couldn't look after them all by herself! The children were excited to help out and through this have been developing their knowledge and skills across the curriculum.

First, the children devised a set of rules to ensure the safety of the eggs and themselves. Then, in cooperative groups, the children designed some colourful lettering to make a new wall display.  In our Big Writing last week, the children developed their functional writing skills by writing a set of instructions on how to care for a baby chick.  They have also been keeping a daily diary to record their observations.  Through the Word Aware approach the children have learned to use the words huddled, incubator, pipping and brooder box in both their spoken vocabulary and in their writing.  The children learned all about the life cycle of a hen and had the amazing opportunity to watch some of our very own eggs hatch! In our Maths play, the children have been matching numbered egg shells to practise their number bonds and then sorting the egg shells into odd and even numbers.  Finally, in our Art lessons the children have enjoyed making their own chicks using a variety of media.

The chicks have been a much welcomed addition to Edinbarnet, not just by primary 1, but by all of the boys and girls...and staff members too!
