Edinbarnet’s new additions!

As part of primary 1’s topic this term ‘On the Farm’ the children were delighted to receive a special delivery of 10 chick eggs from ‘Farmer Jack’.  Farmer Jack wrote to the children asking if they could help to look after the eggs until they hatched as the mother hen had laid so many she couldn't look after them all by herself! The children were excited to help out and through this have been developing their knowledge and skills across the curriculum. First, the children devised a set of rules to ensure the safety of the eggs and themselves. Then, in cooperative groups, the children designed some colourful lettering to make a new wall display.  In our Big Writing last week, the children developed their functional writing skills by writing a set of instructions on how to care for a baby chick.  They have also been keeping a daily diary to record their observations.   Through the Word Aware approach the children have learned to use the words huddled, incubat...

Edinbarnet's Primary 1 and Auchnacraig ELCC --> Literacy Link

Edinbarnet Primary School and Auchncraig ELCC held their first Literacy Link morning on Wednesday the 17th of January.  Our Literacy Link mornings revolve around a shared text which all children have the opportunity to explore.  P1 Children are paired with a pre-school child and split into 4 groups.  The children rotate around 4 teachers and are given the opportunity to explore: Word Aware with Miss McKelvie Rhyme Aware with Mrs Sweeney Book Bug with Claire (Auchnacraig ELCC) Initial Sounds with Mrs McIntosh The children loved exploring 'The Smartest Giant in Town' and working with their buddies.  Our Literacy Link programme has been set up to allow children to work across levels and to make full use of the learning environments and experiences offered in both the nursery and in the school setting.  This programme runs as well as our transition  mornings.  It allows the children to become comfortable and c...
